Best Free Educational Apps for Kids

In today’s world, computers, tablets, and smartphones are everywhere and in a lot of cases, a necessity. Kids are always on them nowadays, and while limiting screen time can be a good thing, using these devices can also be beneficial thanks to certain apps. There is an endless number of apps for kids out there designed to be both fun and educational that can really get kids engaged and learning without even realizing they are! We’ve got a list of the best free educational apps for kids that they’re sure to love.

Coding is something we hear a lot about nowadays as kids are being encouraged to take it up. Learning programming skills is made easy and fun thanks to Hopscotch. Hopscotch will give a basic understanding of coding but also allow kids (recommended ages 8+) to create their own games. Parents have loved learning about these skills from their children and seeing all the creative work they have put into their own games.

PJ Masks: Time to Be a Hero

Preschoolers will love playing as their favorite PJ Masks character in this free game. They will then face different scenarios in augmented reality in a series of mini-games where social skills will be put into practice. Parents will need to help a bit setting up the camera and of course making sure they are in a safe environment to play (it requires some moving around due to the augmented reality aspect!) but it can be a lot of fun, especially if your child is already a big fan of PJ Masks.

Fish School

Fish School is a great app for kids as young as two. This app for preschoolers goes over letters, numbers 1-20, shapes, colors, and making matches all in an under the sea setting with some fun fish characters. Kids can control what the fish do with easy drag and drop features. Fish School won the Parents’ Choice Gold Award and a Children’s Technology Review Editor’s Choice Award.

LumiKids is another free app that has won several awards, including National Parenting Publications Gold Award, a Best iPad Apps for Kids Award from The Guardian newspaper (UK), Academics Choice Smart Media award winner, and a Children’s Technology Review Editor’s Choice Award for Excellence in Design. Kids aged 2+ will find this app easy from the start, with no overly complicated instructions at all. LumiKids is all about sorting and sequencing by color, shape, or size. It will adapt as your child progresses, so they won’t be bored with the same game getting too easy for them.

Habitat – The Game

Habitat is a game where kids (ages 4+) adopt a polar bear and learn about the environment and conservation. They must perform real-world action to help keep the polar bear happy and healthy and its home safe, such as conserving water and turning off lights when not in use. This game allows little ones to “see” the difference they are making in helping protect the earth all while having fun with a game.

Available on Android (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.elev.habitat) and iOS (https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/habitat-the-game/id858068710?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D4).
